SJ Webcomic Widgets

Postby DanaBoBana » September 1st, 2009, 3:05 pm

Okay, I'm not sure if this has already been brought up, I looked through the topics and haven't found anything related to this. (So if it has, I apologise!) Also I'm not sure if anyone else would find this idea useful or if it would be too difficult to pull this off... but here it goes!

I think it would be cool to be able to have a link to our comics on a website, such as myspace or some other personal website. I have added a link to my comic on my myspace (since many of my friends read them), but I think it would be useful to have a link that would show the last comic that I posted here on SmackJeeves. So when people visit your personal web page, they can see right away that you added a new comic page.

The link would show the new comic, and possibly have a link to the comic profile and have a "latest page" button also. And the html code could be stored in our Manage Webcomic section.

It was just a thought ^_^

I support this, though I don't know if it can link the latest image from another site without some complex stuff.

Very interesting, I approve.

Please help come up with some widget formats. Should the widgets all be standard, or perhaps should they utilize the template system? What are some possible basic layouts?

Great! Here are some rough widget formats that I came up with real quick, just to give you a basic idea.

Of course you could change the layout and colors however you want.

If you wanted to add some extra stuff, you can add the number of fans and comics or ratings, update frequency, etc... but i don't think all of that information is necessary, and may be too complicated. The latest page and the date would be the most useful.

I think it would be best to keep the SmackJeeves colors and the logo on the widget. I guess if anyone would want their own colors to match their own comic style, they could change the html code manually if you decide to give users that option (and if that is possible). Or you could have a few different color layouts to choose from. But I don't think they would complain if you decided to use the basic SJ website colors.

These are really examples, thanks for creating them. I'm going to sticky this topic and add it to the to-do list.

I'm sure its also possible to create it slide-show style as well. I'd like to see that as well...then one can scroll to the comic right after the one they last saw and boom, clicky!

This will rock on my friendster and myspace!

EDIT: Forgot, another idea...

What about music capability? I really REALLY want a music widget that someone can turn on so I can play looped mood music to go with any particular panel. Like I could inset the embedded code INTO my comment or the comic itself (just below it)...then text saying "MOOD MUSIC" with the player thin and discreet, matching my layout.

I don't know if that would be popular or not, but that's something I definitely can see being useful and not only for mood music."

I'd imagine the files would be stored either locally in smackjeeves or streamed from a site like imageshack and such file storage places.

There are applications like this out there that you could embed onto a page. I don't know about comments. I use imeem for my one music page.

Hey :)

This is a great idea!

As for widget formats I suggest as much customisation as possible. Think of in how many ways and different type spots people might want to utilise this. Sidebars, mainheader, maybe even in mail. And to that comes how, why and in what purpous.

You should make it possible to basically only display the image ( some might want to use it as a neat looking link to here). You might consider that some might actually want the entire comic to be able to be read from the off-site wich might not be desirable since smackjeeves wants the traffic. Too easy next and previous-buttons on the widget would caus that maybe?

cheers!
