Why not have your cake and eat it, too? Surely there's someway to implement z-index so that when the links are hovered, they are removed from the document flow and expand. This way, nearby elements aren't forced to accommodate the larger text and letter spacing, but you can retain your expanding/bolding text.

For an example of what I mean, check out this gallery I made. If you notice, when the images are hovered over, the images increase in size without disturbing the rest of the gallery, and I imagine you could implement something similar at least for your menu. This works because of the fact that each anchor element is contained by a list parent element that has a preset height and width to hold it's place. It'd be harder to implement elsewhere, because the links aren't contained in a parent element by themselves.

Advantages of this approach:

* It is well structured and allows for pixel perfect menus.
* Retains the striking styles you have set for the hyperlinks (at least for the menu)

Disadvantages:

* The rest of the hyperlinks cannot be fixed in this way, unless they exist in a parent element by themselves.
* Might have to rework the menu classes and styles.
* Positioning headaches and such.

Is it okay if I take this and edit it to my liking?
I'm making it brown instead of purple and change the images to ones I create myself :P

If it's not okay with you I won't do it ^^
