online comic printing services?

Postby E.Redemption » March 29th, 2010, 12:32 am

I hope this is not in the wrong forum.

I'm doing some research and it would be very nice if you guys could help me with this:

What are some good and cheap online comic printing services other than the usual sites like lulu.com?

Do you guys know of any one that is willing to print mature material?

i haven't used them for myself, but i do own a self-published book by an artist who used them: http://ka-blam.com/printing/ the book is very high quality, binding is great and really strong, but flexible. my only complaint is that the ink on the pages is really glossy. not matte at all. looks very "fresh," which is fine if you like that look i guess.

also, the book i own has a few "mature" situations but isn't out right porn, so i'm not sure how they handle mature material.

I currently own an enormous graphic novel (~450 pages) printed by ComiXpress, and it seems to be of pretty decent quality. I plan on using them when running off copies of my own short (20-page) comic to give to friends/family and hand out at cons, and the quote that the site generated said I could get copies printed for less than $3. You can even opt to have an ad printed that will lower the cost by a few dimes.

As for the mature material, I donno. I didn't see any blurbs about "quality" control, and some of the other comics they print seem to be pretty gory and risque (...or both.)

Good luck and let us know who you go with?

I just want to know all my options before I do anything, is there any other ones out there or is it just Comixpress and Kablam?

You may want to check out Createspace https://www.createspace.com/ as well. Pricewise they aren't as competitive for low page counts as Comixpress or Kablam but you get listed on Amazon and get an ISBN. For pagecounts of books 48 pages or above there prices are very competitive.

Not sure about Createspace's quality as I haven't used them yet. I have seen books from both Kablam and Comixpress and they look very good.

I have no intention of self publishing. In fact I don't really want them to distribute my work. All I want is a little printed comic for small distribution to friends and family.

OH OH! Nymine can help! *flails* Hows about this? More of a BOOK than a comic, but uh, I guess it's a little more durable? Still, might be something to look into.

Word.

That's all I'd want, too. That, and it'd be cool if for portfolio I could whip out a little bound-book instead of having to leaf through a bunch of pages. :D

If I ever try anything for myself, I'll let you know how it goes - pros and cons!

Actually, I'm working on something that's going to be printed with this service already. ^^ Blurb's a little pricey though.

comicxpress will be your best bet. at the 2008 convention i met an artist who had his book printed out by them and the quality was good. not bad at all, when i do decide to publish my comic i will defiantly consider them. :D

ComiXpress is nice but turn-around is slow.

I'm talking with Sidekick Printing currently, and if this thread is still around by the time I submit a test book and get the finished thing back, I'll post the results. Sidekick is the only POD/small-run printer I know of that does porn, also, haha.

I've used Kablam. When they get it right they do a very good job... but I've found their quality to be extremely variable. Of the 50 or so books I've had printed by them, five were very poorly bound/trimmed - so that some pages had their tops cut short, and other had white gaps under panels that were supposed to bleed off the page - in addition on the same five the covers were all printed with the color balance off.

A friend had a similiar problem and they printed up replacement copies at no charge. I never got anything back for my copies though.

The other 45 or so were satisfactory though. The paper they use (at least for b/w) is exceptionally thin, but otherwise there's not much I can complain about.
My book also had boobs and a penis in it, and they claim they'll print R rated content, just not X rated/porn content.

I've heard good things about comixpress, but I haven't used them yet. I plan to in the future. They seem to offer a quicker turn around than kablam, but I don't like that I have to submit my files in PDF form...

I've also heard of http://www.sipscomics.com/home.html but don't know anybody who has used them.

I found a list of printers and a brief analysis of their services the other day while roaming about the interwebs. Most of them have been mentioned; a couple have not.

The person who wrote it apparently does a lot of yaoi? So she seems to have pretty good knowledge about which publishers will accept adult content, if that's what you're looking to publish.
