How to know if our manga is Seinen or Shounen

Postby ChazzardXD » January 22nd, 2019, 3:49 pm

My team and I are currently writing a manga and we are having a little trouble telling if it's a Seinen manga or a Shounen. We are leaning more towards Seinen, but we aren't sure... does anyone have any tips or ideas to tell?

Seinen "many years"= for ages 18+
Shonen "few years"= for ages 10-18

Does your comic contain adult themes (language, nudity, violence)? If so, it is a seinen.

The shounen/seinen cutoff is similar to the "Older Teen" cut-off in western comics, around 16+ rather than 18+.

If your comic deals with themes not likely to be relatable to or understood by people under 16, then it's probably seinen (or otona, for adults). That's really all there is to it, really.

That makes sense. It's got mild to strong language, violence, tragedy, partial nudity and fantasy violence. Like supernatural, magical violence. It's probably a Seinen then.

That's a good point. We were just a little confused as to the demographic because the cast is primarily highschool students. We now understand that being primarily a highschool aged cast doesn't mean it's automatically a shounen, it's about the plot ands let aspects of it that make it seinen. Like the violence or partial nudity and such.
