What happens if you Fail a drug test?

Postby Vitotamito » December 29th, 2011, 3:31 pm

I woke up this morning, got a phone call about a job interview for a catering place I had applied. Cool! After the interview, after she's like, "I want to hire you. Fill out all these W4 forms and stuff." Then after I filled all of it out, the last thing I needed to do was go get a drug test. UNEXPECTED!

I saw a concert last night. The room was thick with Pot smoke. 2 hours of breathing it in, I can't imagine it wasn't still in my system 12 hours later for this urine test. I didn't have any time to do anything really (besides shower and look nice) before I went to the interview and subsequent test (She scheduled me for 1:30, and the interview got done at 1). Not that I knew this test was coming.

So, I think I'm fucked for this. What does failing a drug test mean? In 48 hours when my test comes back failed, what will happen to my prospective job? Is this something that will go on my medical record?

Well fuck, it'll mostly just lead to you not getting the job I think.

This should set your mind at ease.
Probably the Most Important Part wrote:It [second hand marijuana smoke] would not register on our tests. We had a test where someone was placed in a isolated room with THC smoke was being pumped in for 24 hours straight and the person did not register. On a lab test it did pick up about 3 or 4 nanograms but as you know instant tests are set at 50ng/ml.

Does second hand marijuana smoke affect our drug tests?

Even at the confirmatory GC/MS lab urine drug test level of 15 ng/ml, you would still not test positive for marijuana due to second hand smoke. The cutoff level for the saliva drug test is 100 ng/ml (so again, second hand smoke would not produce a positive).

I worry about this happening to me, every job I've had so far has never asked for a drug test. I might be stealing the thread here but, if a drug test came back with signs of drug use, would the company inform the police?

Nah, that's not stealing the thread, just asking a specific point about it. Good question.

The active chemicals in Pot can reside in body fat for up to a week or so, and stress actually helps release it into your bloodstream.

Some places would be worried about even second hand smoke, or contact highs as it may affect your preformance.

If it is reported to the police and it can be shown to simply be from secondhand smoke you are not likely to get a conviction. They have to show you were knowingly using illegal substances. You may not get the job, but there should be no police record for it.

Another question is can they put the word out about the failed test, as a black mark against you for other employers?

Companies aren't legally allowed to say negative things about your performance if questioned by a prospective employer checking references. I can't imagine the shitstorm if one company told another company that you came up positive for a drug test (there is absolutely no reason for them to assume you're still doing drugs). Beyond that, if the company never hires you in the first place, future employers would never have any reason to contact them or even know that you applied there.

Since blankd has given a really good insight on drug tests, I'll add the rest.

(Working in security for almost 5 years gives me the experience, just so you know.)

1. If the test is positive, then the most it would do is ruin your prospect on getting the job. Sometimes, but it's rare, they will give you a second drug test if they like you.
2. You won't be reported to the police. Most drug tests are done by an outside company and they simply call and say you failed. Most of the time they don't even say what drug came up, just that you failed.
I love you, spam bots.

Pretty much what everyone else said, unless you plan on enlisting in the military anytime soon. They won't report you, per se, but testing positive renders you ineligible for all future service, at least in the Air Force. (The Army, Navy and Marines tend to be a little less strict about it) Admitting you done it beforehand, but not testing positive, just means you don't get a higher security clearance as a non-user would. And finally, if you say you didn't, but test positive for it, you could go to jail, not for the use of it, but for lying on an enlistment form.

If you're really concerned, you can always go buy cleanser at a drugstore, I forget what it's called but it costs something like 10 bucks at Walgreens. Hope this helps, somehow.

As a followup to this thread:

I got the job, and nothing has been brought up on the subject of my drug test. Which leads me to believe that I either passed or they really didn't care as much as they led on. Either way I'm a happy camper and an official "Banquet Server."
