Regarding the art, I think that horror in comics is only effective to me when there is a connection with the other senses. Distorted lines and scribbles to show a loud noise, or the feeling of being disturbed or distressed; rough, disgusting texture so you unintentionally imagine yourself touching the thing and feeling how unpleasant it is.

Regarding the story, it works when the suspense grows slowly in a way that you can not even perceive to a certain extent, but still feel anxious somehow. Being subtle, like a gradually increasing headache, and when it grows big enough, you drastically change the situation causing impact. And when it does happen, scenes that show anguish, being lonely, trapped, suffocating or drowned will always creep me out.
