I used to really like fancomics, but over the years of reading bad non-canon stories I prefer to just read my favorite series from the original creator.
EX: Some shippings in fanfiction can really creep me out. They often show spoilers, so you must be familiar to the original before reading.
Lot of times the fanfiction is just a parity and can make me not like the original series anymore. They make fun of the original so much I feel that I can't take the original show seriously anymore.

I like to read original webcomics if I feel they are good and unique enough. If it says it's original ,but when I read it, it looks like a knock off of some other popular manga/anime I wouldn't read it.

Personally, I really like parodies. If it makes me laugh, I'm all for it, so I read a lot of what might technically be considered fancomics. I won't turn my nose up at a good original story, but sometimes it takes me longer to notice those hidden gems without the advantage of familiar imagery and figures from other popular works to catch my eye. In the end, it comes down to who can pique my interest and keep me hooked. I read what I like, original or not.

Personally, a fancomic has to be REALLY good in order to top an original series.

I don't care. If the comic is good, I like it. There are a ton of both crappy original and crappy fan comics.

I don't have a preference, really. I'm just a fan of non-sequitur comics.

I prefer original comics to fan comics. Though both are fun. But I am always looking out for new characters to fall in love with.

When it comes to fan comics they should be well done, and should have an original perspective to them- explore different aspects that the actual series hasn't done (ex. my final fantasy 0 story, I try to see how the characters behaved through the adventure of ff1).

I enjoy originals as well, but they have to be well written in order to compete with other more familiar ground. I'll be honest it is trickier to get new readers engaged because they don't know what to expect, which is why fan comic are so much more popular.

All in all, I like both, but it's about the quality. I follow both versions on SJ after all :)

I tend to like original comics. Because in fancomics I get very furious very fast if I see something out of character.

But it depends.
- If a fancomics present itself as a serious long running work, I'm not gonna read it. But if it's more like fun/cute/lovely short rip-offs for fans by fans I'll probably enjoy it, as I enjoy regular fanarts.
- If fancomic uses only setting without canon characters to tell an original story(pokemon fandom for example), then there's a high probability that I'll check it out and like it.
- There are fandoms I don't know about. Like, I know who Link is but I haven't played any Legend Zelda games and I don't know about him much. So I won't understand where's Link is OOC or not, so I'll enjoy the story itself.
- And there's porn. I don't take porn seriously.

^ I have too much requirements for fancomics, while my only requirements for originals are good story and decent artwork.

I only read original because more than a fan picture or short parody feels like franchise theft to me.

I do enjoy some fan comics, but those tend to be on the "almost original" side of the fan story spectrum.

Edit: I guess I should elaborate.
I do not care to see characters from a story used in a fan comic, because no matter what they do, it'll probably be OOC. I do not get attached to characters, so I see no point in seeing them do things that they don't have to do for the main plot, especially in a non-canon situation like a fan comic.
However, seeing original characters in an existing world is pretty enjoyable for me, especially if it's an expansive world to begin with (for example, the Pokemon world, or one of the Final Fantasy worlds).

Pretty much this if I'm going to read or write a fancomic.
Unless I'm really dying for a particular ship, or your art/story is friggin good, I'm not going to be all that attached to reading fancomics on canon characters. Besides, with those sort of things I tend to stumble upon them instead of seeking them out.

I'm going to pipe up and say original.

If I want to see characters from already existing series I'll just re-watch/re-read that, i don't want someone else writing them (even though most series are a product of multiple writers). When it comes to a writer I'm not familiar with I want to see their creations, not what they can do with someone else's creations.

I prefer finding original webcomics with their own story and characters; however, I do enjoy reading a fan comic every now and again.
