Any recommendations for BL and GL Manga?

Postby xox1melly1xox » September 21st, 2013, 9:57 pm

I was wondering if there are any recommendations that anyone could give me? Especially on BL...

For the most part I'm not really looking for smut/sex, though if it's just an extra, I don't mind. I'm more interested in character relationships/development and story. I'm not fond of relationships involving rape.

The only yaoi manga I liked was Merry Checker. I couldn't get into Loveless.

Yuri manga I liked were
-Aqua Blue Cinema
-Blue Friend
-Notes from The Garden of Lilies
-Lonely Wolf Lonely Sheep
-Maple Love
-Sasameki Koto
-Girl Friends

I did not like Strawberry Panic.

"Yaoi" refers to m/m smut, so if you're not looking specifically for that, you may want to change your topic title. "BL" is the most common term for m/m. Yaoi is the porny subset of BL.

If you're ever in the mood for well-written characters in your porn, check out Saiki Keita's work. He draws BL smut (as well as het and futa), and most of the stories are too short to have proper relationship-building, but he's got a way with hinting at relationships and building characters in those 5-30 pages that's better than I've seen in most longer romance comics I've read.
He also does a non-porn comic under the name Azuma Tou, but it's not a romance comic.

There's the Less than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal, which isn't a manga, but is probably exactly the sort of thing you're looking for, story-wise.
In fact, you might have better luck looking at webcomics than for manga. Without the editorial/fan pressure to "get to the fun stuff" (whether it's sex or clichéd circumstances to pull the lovebirds apart), they can afford to spend time building up the characters and their relationships. There's plenty of crap to wade through, but the gems are worth it. Sadly, not being a romance fan, I can't point you to the gems. Perhaps someone else can.

I'll check out Less than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal, thanks for the recommendations ^^

Curiously, did the term "Yuri" also become the porny subset of GL? In pixiv and publishers (like Yurihime), the use of 百合(yuri) seems to still define g/g relationships in general.

Not that I know of. "GL" is the dominant term, and "yuri" is an outdated synonym.

"Yuri" and "yaoi" are completely unrelated terms despite looking similar. "Yaoi" started out as a term referring to m/m smut, but expanded to mean all drawn m/m in the west for a lack of another term, but these days we have "BL" so "yaoi" has become outdated (in both senses, arguably). "Yuri" is an all-inclusive term, but has been largely replaced by "GL", as I understand.

For the sake of clarity, I'd stick to BL and GL and not use the y-words when you're speaking in English xP In Japanese, "yuri" is still current as you said, and I don't know whether "GL" is even used.

xD I'll keep that in mind from now on (I'll have to update my usage of the term all around the place eventually lol...). By the way, I caught up with Less than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal. It's definitely the type of story I like, thank you so much~

I find loveless tasteless as well. Well let's see, For some nice BL manga not centered around sex I would say these. Since the time period when I devoured yaoi manga was mostly for the smut, these are really good because they stood out without needing sex.

Pet on Duty - Basically these guys take this one kid into their living area even though it's against the rules. The kid falls in love with one of the main guys.

FAKE! - Cops! I actually don't remember much about this one, but I know that I really liked it, mostly for the niche, which was police/detective stuff.

Yellow - By the same woman who drew FAKE!. I can't remember what it was about at all this time, just that it was good.

Gravitation - This one is a classic. An uppity rock star ends up falling for a famous author who is also a total dick. Actually I got pissed off when they didn't show sex when they finally did it, but I did adore the manga up until then. Actually I should go back to it. One thing though.
Spoiler! :
The author was raped by his mentor, and they alluded to it clearly in the anime.

An honorable mention is Ranma 1/2 which can be BL and GL if you think about it. It's a harem manga where the main character is cursed to turn into a girl every time he gets splashed with cold water and a boy when he gets splashed with hot water. He has an arranged marriage with Akane Tendo, but they actually really hate each other and they both have dozens of suitors, Ranma having both male and female suitors for each of his halfs! Its an action manga at hard and made by the same woman who made Inuyasha.

Hope you like some of these!

Oh yeah, and if you're not into shota, I'm pretty sure most of these characters are around college age at the least.

ANYTHING BY YAMASHITA TOMOKO. LITERALLY. CANNOT PROMO THIS ARTIST ENOUGH.

Ahem.

Some of my all time faves are:

BL

Illumination - Yamashita Tomoko
chapter 4-6. There's nothing wrong with 1-3, but I prefer the short stories in 4-6 to the namesake story. 4 & 5 are very cute, 6 is very sad.

Koi no Hanashi ga shita - Yamashita Tomoko
Ugh. I love this one, so, so much. A bunch of idle dialogue with a narrative hidden in there somewhere.
chapters 1-4 are the main story, then rest are one shots. Chapter 5 of this book is my all time favourite Yamashita Tomoko story. It just makes me weep.

Koi no Kokoro ni Kuroi Hane - Yamashita Tomoko
I don't know if this could rightfully be called BL, since this one doesn't actually focus on the gay relationship itself, rather than people around it.

Yes Its Me - Yamashita Tomoko
Chapter 1 or 3 are decent, but pretty basic. I'd suggest skipping chapter 2, if you really don't want to feel like shit. It's a really good short story, one of my favourites, but good god it is so sad. 4-5-8 are the same silly story, and chapter 7 is a sad story about a transgender woman living as a gay man.

Akunin o Nakaseru Houhou - Amagakure Gido

This is kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. It's silly but a) not non con b) old people c) asshole characters. It's nothing too great, but it's cute enough, and the art is very decent.

Doukyuusei - Nakamura Asumiko

I'm pretty sure everyone's read this one, but it's very sweet. Nothing too serious, just some fluff. I think the sequels continued on the same trail of fluffiness.

--------
GL

HER - Yamashita Tomoko
This one is...Weird. And cute. Mainly just weird. I still love it though.

Girl's Planetarium - Amagakure Gido
It's just cute.

There's not that much GL I can recommend... I'd love to read more since hell yeah cute girls and whatnot but there is so much of the ecchi lolicon porn targetted towards men finding decent ones takes such a long time and is just taxing. There are several others I've read, but I never bookmarked them or anything since they were just like "Oh that was cute"- not that special.

I'm not really into BL, but for GL I recommend Eclair: A Girls' Love Anthology That Resonates in your Heart. It's a bunch of short and sweet one-shots that really satisfied my GL cravings.
