Some of the old templates will be deprecated, meaning they'll still exist and comics which use them won't be affected, but they'll be hidden to anyone not using them. Saved/modified templates will of course be unaffected.

No need to back up your banner, they'll continue to be available, just no longer used on the main site.

Is there a rough estimate of when all these changes will be implemented?

Will we be able to upload new banners on the redesigned site, or will the old ones be fossilised with no ability to upload new ones? Though banners won't be useful for the main site, they will still be useful for forum signatures because of their flat, wide shape.

It's looking like mid-late October.

Yep, they're not getting frozen or anything like that. Just won't be used in the directory anymore.

Honestly they should've done this years ago and I'm a little pissed that if I didn't check this site on a regular basis my comics would essentially disappear from the directory.

I suppose that is why the announcement for the new SJ design gives users at least two months to create a cover, which will easily solves that issue. Not sure if there's a point of having a comic uploaded on here and not check on it at least once every two weeks, unless the account's abandoned.

Now I got your e-mail thanks for the heads up. But I do have cover pages used in the comics I have up. but went on the home page of my comics and it's telling me:-
"It seems that one or more of your comics does not have a Comic Cover image."
Now does that mean the specs/ratio of the current pages aren't the correct size?
Just wanna know so when I get time I can jump on to my computer and fix them.

Cheers

I was surprised to receive the email about the SJ redesign, mainly because it's been a number of years since my comics had ended, and I don't believe they got much attention anyway. I was a little concerned about what the redesign would potentially do to our individual comics and page templates - especially considering mine are heavily modified, but I'm happy to hear that that much won't be affected by the changes.

As for cover images, that much I was able to do just to ensure my comics will continued to be listed on SJ.

All of this sounds rather interesting, so I'm curious to see what the completed, new and improved SJ will look like; I'll probably check back in a couple of weeks to see for myself.

It probably just means you haven't uploaded the cover image onto your comic's Site Profile yet. You do that the same way you'd upload a banner for your comic (Edit Profile while on that comic's webcomic management), and you can find the specs/upload field/etc over there. Smackjeeves won't read the first page on your webcomic as your Comic Cover, partly because not all comics will have their first page be a comic cover, and partly because it allows authors to update their Comic Cover as if it were a site banner to reflect the non-static nature of a comic, if that applies to their work.

The "Comic Cover" image we need is not referring to the cover pages of your comic. It's a separate image that you need to upload to represent your comic throughout the site, similar to (and replacing) the existing site banner. Make sense?

Admin, will we ever be able to mark individual pages as mature instead of entire comics?

I second this question.

The "Mature" status is currently meant for stuff that's essentially 18+ (but not outright porn, since the ToS doesn't allow that), meaning it requires a click-through warning message that essentially absolves SJ and the comic author of legal responsibility for what you see. How would this be implemented on a per-page basis without being annoying or useless?
Or are you asking for this feature for "lighter" content that normally would not require a click-through warning?

I think the general idea is, "My entire comic could be marketed towards teens, so there's no mature content, except this one page in the middle of a traumatic flashback that I don't want to freak out younger readers with so I'd like a little button I can have people click to say "I can handle the content of this page, lemme see it" instead of chasing away potential readers because the entire comic is marked as mature when it's really not".

Yeah, I second that notion. I've read comics that are marked Mature just because of, like, one page that gets violent. I would like for that feature to happen someday, since some comics could really use that feature.
Just some kid who likes to draw and sprite. Thinking of starting a comic and actually sticking with it.
