[Beta] New Uploader

Postby Admin » December 21st, 2018, 11:49 am

Hey Everyone,

I've been working hard on a new comic page uploader, and it's now available to try. Just head to where you usually upload comics and you should see a link to check it out. Your feedback is welcome!

Thanks,
Dan

Thank you for working on an update! I like the design so far, it looks more modern and it allows you to not forget to upload your file lol ^-^
After I select a file from my computer with the "browse" option, nothing changes. Drag and drop won't work either (if that is a function).
I hope this feedback helps and it is not just me being clumsy.

Huh, I have the same problem. I'm using the latest Firefox. Might be related to this console error, the JS that handles the form doesn't run because part of it is broken.

Ah, my bad. I'm pretty sure that was just a caching issue, should be fixed now.

EDIT: Nevermind, that regex isn't supported by FireFox apparently. Working on a fix.

EDIT 2: Should be fixed.

It seems to work now. I didn't actually go through with an upload since it's still a few days before I can post my pages.

I love that there's an Add Chapter button right there, thank you for adding that!

A couple of minor requests:
1. It feels ambiguous that the area where you can change/update the image says "Upload Image" as if you haven't uploaded one already. I think it would look clearer like this:
Image
I changed the "Upload Image" label to "Change Image" and made "Image URL" the placeholder text of that field instead of the label, so that it's clear that those two elements are options for the same thing ("Change Image"). I think it also looks cleaner this way.

2. I'd like it if there were "Cancel" buttons or something on the author comment and alt text fields, or at least some way to collapse them if they're empty. I have a tendency to click things I don't need, and I like the option to close them because clutter bothers me. This isn't important, this is just a derp of mine, so if it would be a hassle to implement, it's probably not worth it.

Edit: Nitpick: The "return to top" arrow that shows up when you've got a bunch of pages reads like an "upload" arrow to me. I think the horizontal bar should be at the top rather than the bottom.

Oh, it's an upload button? It took me to the top and it was alongside a bunch of other navigation (the thumbnails) so I thought it was a return-to-top button, more navigation. Looking at it again, it goes to the upload form, so that makes sense. Perhaps a plus (+) button or an upload + Plus button might be clearer in the "upload more" meaning? I'd also put it on the right or next to the thumbnails, since the new pages will be after the existing ones by default.

Edit: Maybe something like this, but styled better (no shadow), and perhaps with a big + instead of the upload icon?

Ah, I see what you were saying now - just that the icon was confusing. Got it. Yeah, it's just a scroll-to-top button.

hm... interesting. I like it that the new uploader creates the page name out of the file name.

Works great! It's kinda nice, especially if you're the type that uploads pages in batches, rather than one per day/every other day/week/month/however you choose to space your updates. Also nice that when uploading multiples, I can just click on the X of one I don't want and remove it, without having to delete the other pages, start over, or go bback and remove it later. Pretty slick. Thanks, Dan!

Finally got to go through an entire upload process with the new uploader! I like how seamless it is whether you only upload one page or a bunch.

The very end of the process felt a little meh compared to the rest of the experience though. I think instead of a message that tells you how to go back to Webcomic Management, it should instead have buttons to do different things, e.g.
[Go to Comics Management]
[Go to Comic Profile] (that's always where I go after uploading anyway, to verify that it's uploaded and publicly visible (or not).)
[Upload More] (returns to the uploader, keeps the time settings, but clears the pages, ready for another batch)
[Return to Uploader] (just closes the message? Can pages be edited from this UI? What is the purpose of this?)

Re: [Beta] New Uploader

I just recently finished migrating 300+ pages over from Tumblr. I did a small batch just a day before this thread, and then started using the beta uploader. And I have to say this new uploader was so great to use! Thank you! Seriously, it made what I thought was going to be an awful chore go by so much easier. Lifesaver!! Basically I'm just so happy lol

Overall I'm super impressed at how much thought was put into so many little things, and how easy it was to use. I tried to think of improvement suggestions, but to be honest everything I could come up with feels really minor (not everyone would necessarily use them; cost-benefit to implementing might not be that good, etc.), so feel free to ignore if they're impractical. Also I feel like some of my comments are heavily skewed to the perspective of someone uploading hundreds of pages at time. Now that I'm back to a more normal posting schedule of a couple of pages a week, I may not be as affected by some of the things I mention below.

1) I love how the author's notes and alt tags can be added right here for every individual page. I actually use alt tags extensively for my comic pages - nothing extra/hidden, just trying to support accessibility - so I did find myself wishing I could default have that field open for filling in, to reduce the number of clicks. If there was a setting people could toggle on their individual accounts and have it remember, that'd be awesome, but not a big deal - I saved a ton of time already with this tool.

2) I like eishiya's suggestions about the Upload image/image URL presentation. It didn't trip me up but I think the suggested mockup looks more intuitive.

3) I really like how the tool gives you the option to apply your scheduling choices to all pages, and to apply the chapter selection to all pages from that upload onwards. It would be neat to have something similar for titling the pages, e.g., if people want to have some particular structure that remains the same and then they can replace the page number or have it increase sequentially.

4) Also, something I noticed - I was uploading both comic pages and omake/bonus illustrations, and a few times I'd go back and manually change the upload times to switch around their order, but they would upload and go live in the same order they originally appeared on the page. For example:

Sequence on the page:
Comic page 1 - go live at 8pm
Illustration - 8:01pm
Comic page 2 - 8:02pm

So I might change the times to make the illustration 8:03 pm or something like that to show up at the end. But when I look at the uploaded files, they still show up in the sequence they were visually in, so then I have to drag them around or click the reset to organize them by time. Is that something that might be changed? Or maybe it's something that's already been fixed - I've already passed the point of batch uploading a ton of different things so I haven't tested this again. It's also possible it's something I was experiencing with the previous uploader and not the current one and my brain just confused the two.

5) I also think a clearer confirmation with more contrast at the end would be good. It threw me off at first because all the uploads and fields/info stayed on the screen and the page didn't look that different, so I wasn't sure if everything was actually done or not.

Thanks everyone for your feedback so far, just taking it all in right now to decide how to move forward.

maiji, on this specifically:

Pages don't necessarily get ordered by their release date. They get ordered by their... order. If you go to the Comic Management page where you see your chapters on the left and the pages on the right, you can re-order the pages from the right panel. The reason the uploader doesn't have re-ordering capabilities is mainly to cut down on complexity, but if you think you should be able to click-drag the pages around from the uploader to re-order them, let me know.

@Admin - That's what I ended up doing (I realize my post wasn't very clear - I did end up going to Comic Management and dragging them or clicking the reset to make them automatically sort by time). Thanks for clarifying :D It makes sense redragging in the uploader itself wasn't implemented because of complexity. TBH it's a very minor thing so it doesn't bother me since there's a pretty fast fix/workaround afterwards. One of those "ooh this would be cool to have", bearing in mind what we have already is highly functional and effective.
