Domain name issue- Safari can't find the server.

Postby Caroline Parkinson » April 19th, 2017, 4:09 pm

Hi, Just sorted out the a new site and uploaded comics to it here
http://beneaththecloudscomic.smackjeeves.com
When I tried to change my domain name though, I can't get it to work.
.The domain is http://www.beneaththecloudscomic.com - its previously been used with another website.

Icontacted my host company (Easily), as when I typed into the name server fields the text appears as
ns1.smackjeeves.com. (including the full stop) not NS1.SMACKJEEVES.COM They have assured me that they've reset it and everything should be fine, but I'm currently getting a error message, saying that Safari can't find the server. Wasn't expecting to have problems at this stage in the process (I thought the design would trip me up) and am getting a bit frustrated with the whole thing. Currently tempted to register a new domain and start from scratch.

The settings on smackjeeves are as follows;
Custom Domain Name:The domain at which you would like this webcomic to be hosted (i.e. mycomic.com)
beneaththecloudscomic.com
Permanently redirect all traffic going to beneaththecloudscomic.smackjeeves.com to the new domain?
Yes

Is this right? Am I doing something really obviously stupid of should I tell Easily that whatever they've done to allegedly fix the problem hasn't worked? Or should I wait longer (it's been a day and a half so far)
Hoping you can help
Caroline

It can take changes to name server information a few hours to a couple of days to propagate through the DNS system. Perhaps all you need to do it wait. If it's still a problem in a couple of days, then there's probably some other, bigger problem.

In the mean time, perhaps you should uncheck the "permanently redirect" checkbox so that you can still access the site at beneaththecloudscomic.smackjeeves.com until the domain name starts working.

Heya, thanks for your helpful; and quick reply, unfortunately still having problems, so contacted the domain name company (Easily)
They've told me that the lower case and full stop is something that's automatically added to the nameservers , and should not be causing a problem. They have said that the problem is that the nameservers are not registered because they "can't find it on DNS lookup at kloth.net" (??)
I don't know a lot about this, so can't tell how accurate their advice is, but the upshot is that they say they've checked everything out their end and it's all fine, so the problem must be with something on smackjeeves.
I've changed "Permanently redirect all traffic going to beneaththecloudscomic.smackjeeves.com to the new domain" to "No" but the "Home" site is still pointing towards "beneaththecloudscomic.com" after several days and a couple of attempts at resetting it.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm half tempted to buy a new domain name with GoDaddy and start the whole process from scratch, but I like the one I've got and can't really afford to buy another one right now.
The promotion plan I had is on hold because I don't know which web address will be working in a couple of weeks. Grrr. (But read the hell out of it when it gets going! It's gonna be good!)

Cheers

It could very well be something with SJ, but only Admin has access to that stuff. If he doesn't respond here, you could contact him directly via the site's contact form or PMs.

If you do decide to switch domain providers,
1. Don't use GoDaddy, their support is awful. The reason they're so popular isn't because of their quality, but because they do a lot of advertising.
2. You should be able to transfer your existing domain to a new provider without having to buy a new one. There may be a small fee involved in this, but at least you get to keep your domain.

You shouldn't need to switch though! Hopefully Admin will see this thread soon.
