Rules

    1) Use descriptive titles for your threads. Example: "How do I upload comics?" Do not use vague titles like, "question," "HELP! ANYBODY??"

    2) Describe your problem in detail. Explain exactly what is wrong. Post images, screen shots, links, code snippets - whatever is relevant. The better the information you provide, the better the solution you will receive.

    3) One question per thread. Do not post multiple questions in one thread; that way, we can resolve questions individually. Make a new thread for each question you have, unless your questions are closely related.

    4) Be polite. The more polite you are, the more people will want to help you. Be patient, and we will help you find the solution to your problem.

If your question has been resolved, please say so. A thank you would also be nice. If your question has NOT been answered, say so in the original topic. If your topic has been moved to resolved, you may then AND ONLY THEN post a new topic regarding the same issue.

Uploading your Avatar

Postby Mr Aids » July 21st, 2011, 7:54 am

You may have tried to change your avatar via the forums, and received this message.

The avatar functionality is currently disabled.

This is because you can only change your avatar via the main site. To do so:

    Go to the main site.

Click on 'My Profile' near the top right of the page.

On your profile you should see 'Edit Profile Information'. Click it.

At the bottom of the page is the option to change your avatar. It needs to be 125x125px or less, 12kb or less, as well as an appropriate image format (.png, .jpeg, .gif). If your avatar exceeds the file size, you may use the remote link URL to link to an avatar you have uploaded onto an image hosting site (such as Photobucket or Imageshack). However, the link needs to be the direct link, and still cannot exceed the image dimensions of 125x125 pixels.

If you still have any issues regarding uploading your avatar feel free to post here.

I think you should make a post in the Bugs & Glitches forum about that. Looks like SJ doesn't check the dimensions for off-site avatars, or checks them poorly.

I have a question. A certain SJ user has an avatar that I think might be inappropiate. Are there any guidelines regarding this? Anywhere you can report an avatar you think is innapropriate?

Yeah if you think an avatar is innapropriate, you can PM Admin and let him know, and if he thinks so as well he will take it down.

Uhm...I am trying to upload my avatar, and it has the correct dimension of 125x125 but it still says there is an error because it cannot exceed 11.72 KB? How do I change that? :c

Either you can save your avatar as a lower-resolution image or you can upload it to an image-sharing website such as Imageshack or Photobucket and upload your avatar via URL.

Ghost, an online novel — Sketchbook thread — deviantArt

Um, I tried uploading mine and it's less than 125x125 and EXACTLY 12kb, it's suppose to be a gif but it only stays as an image and I don't know what's wrong.

I've heard another person mention this issue. Uploading the image to another host and using the remote link feature fixes the problem. Looks like something's changed with SJ's avatar uploader.

If your avatar is larger than 12kb or larger than 125x125px, it will be downsampled to be within those sizes. Animated gifs are reduced to their first frame. This is SJ's way is keeping avatars small and quick to load. If you want to keep your avatar animated, you'll have to find a way to get it under 12kb. Unfortunately, that's very difficult, I've only been able to achieve it with some pixel art, never anything from a show or featuring complex animations.

I've asked Admin to increase the file size twice (since 12kb is tiny), but he refused both times.

It's been 5 years.

As the policy changed?

Don't understand why the still images get more than 12kb and aren't down-sampled yet animated gifs are...

The policy hasn't changed, it's just become better-implemented. There was a problem a while back with people using tricking the off-site link feature to have avatars that were grossly above the limit, so the avatar system was changed to make it harder to break. The only problem is that the ridiculously tiny (given the maximum image dimensions) 12000 byte limit was not raised.

Still image avatars are down-sampled if they're larger than 12kb, the difference is just less noticeable. If you find an instance where that's not the case, please report it to Admin.

Postby Royle McCulloch » September 8th, 2015, 8:34 am

Hey so i'm trying to upload an animated gif avatar, but when its uploaded it comes out as a still image. I've tried a couple different ways, from linking it from other sites like imgur, or using a hidden comic here to link the image. On those pages the gif plays. But when linked to my profile the gif wont play. I've also tried uploading it directly and its the same story. Not sure if I have a bug, or I've been restricted from gif avatars or what.

Any help?
