What determines "Similar Comics" to a comic?

Postby jellyfishin » March 20th, 2019, 8:00 pm

I had noticed one of the new comics uploaded on SJ was something that I was originally following on Tumblr, so I decided to add it in my favorites despite it not having pages yet; this basically made me the only fan of the comic as of this moment. When I scrolled down to the "Similar Comics" section, I was surprised to see that all the suggestions for similar comics were practically comics I have in my favorites.

Are "Similar Comics" determined solely by what fans are also reading, or are there other underlying variables? I just ask because I can't see how an Undertale AU comic is similar to "A Date With Death" or "Krazy Noodle Massacre".

It's based solely on shared fans, and specifically I think it's measured as a percentage of that comic's readership. So, if a comic has 10 fans and 5 of them are also fans of your comic, that's 50% shared fans, and that comic will be more "similar" than a comic with 50 fans of whom 10 also favourited your comic (20%).

In the future, please check the forum before making a new thread :'D There was a thread on this exact topic in this very forum section just a couple of months ago, it's still on the front page of New Questions.

Wait, really? I guess I just be partially brain dead as of this moment to not have spotted it (I literally went through all 36 pages of forum thread titles to see if my questions answered before and didn't see anything. )

Whoops :'D Brain farts happen! It was the thread titled Similar comic meaning? which is admittedly not the clearest title. There are a few older threads as well, but I wouldn't blame anyone for not finding them unless they know how to use the advanced search feature.
